Charles Lewinsky: Gerron (2011). The Swiss Contribution to Holocaust Literature

This master's thesis aims to analyze the biographical novel Gerron and the Nazi propaganda film about "the happy life of Jews in the ghetto," in whose production the protagonist of the said novel participated, and to provide a closer look at the period of the Third Reich and the atrocious Holocaust through the example of the Terezín ghetto, where both the biographical novel and the Nazi propaganda film are set. Charles Lewinsky's biographical novel Gerron from 2011, which was nominated for the Swiss Book Prize, combines a factual and a fictional biography of the famous German actor and director of Jewish descent Kurt Gerron, who was chosen in 1944 as a prisoner in the Terezín ghetto to write the screenplay for and then to direct a Nazi propaganda film depicting "the happy life of Jews in the Terezín ghetto." That is why this master's thesis consisting of five chapters deals in the individual chapters with 1) factual and fictional (artistically rendered) biography and their differences; 2) basic information about the life and work of the writer Charles Lewinsky; 3) a sketch of the period of the Third Reich and the atrocious Holocaust based on the example of the Terezín ghetto; 4) the constellation and characterization of the literary characters in relation to the moral conflict which the text...
Hans Krása and his opera for children Brundibár

Summary: Without a doubt, Hans Krása belongs amongst the most important figures in Czech music. In my thesis, I would like to focus on his opera for children, Brundibar, which represents an important bridge between free cultural expression and life behind the walls at the Terezin concentration camp. Clearly, it will be fruitful to compare both the Prague and Terezin versions of this piece. With this work, I would like to delve into the personality of the composer, his output, and musical life in the Terezin ghetto. Key words: Analysis, Brundibar, holocaust, interpretation, opera, orchestra score, piano reduction, Terezin Ghetto, Terezin Initiative.
The survival strategies used by children and teenagers imprisoned in the Terezin ghetto between 1942-45 based on their diaries

The diploma thesis The survival strategy used by children and youth imprisoned in the Terezin ghetto between 1942 - 1945 based on their diaries is a study, which analyze some extant diaries written by children deported during Word War II to the Terezin ghetto. As the main sources served archive materials, especially unpublished children's diaries kept in the Jewish Museum of Prague and in the Terezin Memorial. Terezin ghetto (Theresienstadt) was exist between November 1941 and May 1945. Part of this work is concise representation of the ghetto's beginning and function and overall conditions. In the following chapter is briefly described children's homes, which were established thanks to Jugendfürsorge, department which cared about youth in the ghetto. This part deals with the moral influence on children given by the specific conditions and it was presented supporting function of the arts performed by adult prisoners and children too. The main part of this work consists in a researching of the diary entries sorted in predermined aspects. One of them is the space-time aspect. It was selected some entries which described the past, the present and the future. Other entries included reflecting of space out of the ghetto and space in. It was made many hypothesis which contributed to the next analyses....

Practice of Jewish Feasts in Terezín

The bachelor thesis "Practicing Jewish holidays in Terezín" deals with the Jewish situation in the first half of the 20th century with emphasis on the years of the 2nd world war. In the initial part of my thesis I focus on the development of Jews in the area of Czech lands, elementary classification of different Jewish groups and the situation of anti-Semitic riots just before the war. This is followed by the characteristic of Terezín from the beginning to the liberation in the year 1945. The characteristic of the most important Jewish holidays and customs is an integral part of the thesis. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to attempt to apply the gained knowledge to the environment of the Terezín ghetto. The information concerning these issues was drawn from the archive of visual history Malach, in which there are thousands of testimonies of survivors, and also from specialized literature. I reached the conclusion that the holidays were celebrated in the difficult conditions of the ghetto, even if only symbolically with the use of prayers or collective reminiscence. Paradoxical holidays are those that are connected with fasting, all you have to do is to abstain from food and even these holidays are remembered by the survivors. The thesis should serve as a general overview of the Jewish situation...
Social aspects of the forced community in Terezin

This study deals with aspects of the everyday social reality of the forced community in the Terezin ghetto in 1941-1945. It is a microsociological introspection of the life of the prisoners that lived in the ghetto. It aims to define social factors that influenced the lives of people that were stigmatized, fought for their lives and lived in border-line situations. The research part of the study uses biographical method. It uses 10 recorded testimonials of survivors - former Terezin prisoners. The research was carried out by means of partly structured interviews. The questions dealt with internal and external factors that created the daily reality of this forced community. The aim was to map their subjective perception of life conditions, social ties, both negative and positive factors and further personal utterances of the narrators. The testimonies serve for better and deeper understanding of the Terezin reality. The factors that affected the community in a negative way included fear of the unknown, fear of loosing close friends and relatives, very bad life conditions that strongly affected the negative mind-set of people and loss of moral values. In contrast, the positive factors included culture and sports that were welcomed by the prisoners as they allowed them to shift aside gloomy thoughts....

Kamarád and Domov Magazines - Terezín Ghetto in the View of Children

The bachelor thesis will deal with the topic relating to the years 1940 ? 1945. The work will focus on children´s creation in Terezín ghetto. Particularly I will examine the magazine called Kamarád (Friend) which was used to be published from October 1943 till September 1944 and the magazine called Domov which was used to be edited from December 1943 till May 1944. Marginally I will devote to a historical context and conditions which the children in concentracion camps were forced to live in. The core of the work is concentrated on content, types of articles and reflections of life in Tere-zín.
